Talk:Weapon Runes
OK-
This is a direct knockoff from Diablo2, however Nyn's talk about runes got me to thinking. I think I may have brought this up at some point in the past, but here's a more refined version.
I'm thinking of runes almost in a similar fashion as the "spell language" that exists. Small fragments of the spell language have a certain meaning, but the true power of the spell comes out when the entire "word" is put together. Runes would be much the same way. Individually, the runes would be fairly low powered, however in the correct combination they would help to create much more useful/powerful weapons/armor.
For instance let's start with a basic 3 rune setup. Rune A adds +1 damroll. Rune B adds +1 hitroll. Rune C adds +1 strength. Now, if we had a 3 socket weapon/shield, the combined runes would together only add 1dam/1hit/1str. UNLESS! They were placed in the specific order of CBA, at which point the shield would gain a "bonus" 50 maxhit as well. The combination/insetting of the runes in this way could/would also change the shield's long/short description (if possible).
Obviously I'm not sure if/how the coding of anything like this could or would work, but I'm just throwing it out there as a possible tangent onto the rune ideas that are floating around.
Also, this could or would create the necessity for "blank" armors/shields/weapons to come into existence. Things with 2-4 inset slots, and maybe no existing stats. Weapons would have avedam 1 until the right runeword was placed in them to give them correct stats. The actual runeword recipes could be given as hints from mobs, rewards from quests, and some could be just trial and error for them to figure out. Runes could have a relative rarity where the easiest runes to find would make relatively low-power runewords, but runewords containing the rarer runes would be much nicer. Runewords comprised solely of the rarest runes would obviously have some high power stats on them.

oo...
I was looking at a game that had runes you could attach to a weapon or a piece of armor. Once attached it couldn't be removed. But it would do things like, if rune A was attached to a sword, it would give +5 electric attack, but if it was attached to a piece of armor, it would give +5 electric resistance.
